The Collection and Program

The Oro & Aquae program features a carefully selected roster of contemporary artists whose practices span diverse mediums, methodologies, and conceptual approaches. Each artist in our program has been chosen for their distinctive voice, sustained commitment to their practice, and the significant contribution their work makes to contemporary artistic discourse.

Dawei Yang is a Chinese contemporary artist whose practice is rooted in photography as a means of investigating the evolving relationship between landscape, space, and human experience. For more than two decades, Yang has approached photography not as mere documentation, but as a critical method for understanding how nature, history, culture, and time converge within the contemporary landscape. Trained at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, where he received his B.A. in Photography and currently serves as Guest Lecturer, Yang constructs restrained compositions through heightened sensitivity to light, scale, distance, and temporality. His images resist spectacle in favor of sustained observation. His photographs of remote deserts, glaciers, mountains, and landscapes marked by human intervention move beyond conventional notions of landscape to reveal environments shaped by continuous interaction between natural processes and human presence. Since 2004, Yang has exhibited extensively throughout China and internationally, with presentations in Beijing, Paris, Barcelona, Antwerp, Lyon, Shenzhen, and Xiamen. His work has been featured at the Pingyao International Photography Festival, Caochangdi Photography Season, Platform China, TS1 Gallery, Galerie Maeght, and Felix Ringel Gallery, among other institutions. Yang's practice positions landscape not as passive subject but as dynamic field where history, environment, and human intervention intersect, offering nuanced reflection on how we perceive and inhabit the world.

Sophia Gao creates luminous investigations into the intersection of Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions. Her paintings, executed with remarkable technical precision, explore themes of cultural memory, natural phenomena, and transcendence. Working primarily in oil and acrylic, often incorporating gold leaf and mixed media elements, Gao constructs ethereal compositions that hover between abstraction and representation. Her series "Mist (氤氲)" and "Coral Sea" demonstrate a mastery of color, light, and atmospheric space that places her work in dialogue with both classical Chinese painting traditions and contemporary abstract practice. Gao's distinctive visual language combines delicate brushwork with bold compositional structures, creating works that bridge Eastern and Western artistic traditions. Through her art, she investigates themes of cultural identity, memory, and transformation in an increasingly globalized world. Her work has found resonance with collectors across North America and Asia, drawn to her unique synthesis of contemplative depth and visual poetry.

Junliang Hou is a painter whose practice explores the tension between social theater and individual solitude within the contemporary condition. Born at the turn of the century, Hou positions himself at the intersection of academic tradition and a fragmented digital age, employing oil painting as resistance to speed. He deliberately slows down to examine the estrangement, absurdity, and quiet desolation often overlooked in accelerated contemporary life. Through deconstruction of quotidian scenes, he captures fleeting psychological moments diluted within social relations, familial structures, and shared public spaces. His work does not mechanically reproduce reality; rather, it reconstructs it through psychological realism. Hou is particularly concerned with the subject's sense of placement within environment, whether seated at a silent dining table or situated within the depth of a hotel corridor, regarding these spaces as stages suspended in stillness. Through deliberate composition and orchestration of light (ranging from cold artificiality of interior illumination to ambiguous natural light of dusk) ordinary gestures such as eating, walking, or gazing are imbued with ritualistic, near-sacred quality. His paintings extend the material weight and tactile sensibility of oil painting, employing unstable lighting conditions to delineate psychological zones that blur boundaries between external reality and the subconscious, inviting viewers not merely to observe but to experience emotion oscillating between repression and release.

Jinguo Huang is dedicated to reconfiguring the materiality of the Eastern literati tradition within a contemporary context. In her acclaimed "Growth Series," Huang employs precise command of oil painting to extract classical motifs—Taihu rocks, scholar's stones, and ancient trees—from their historical frameworks. While preserving the structural aesthetics inherent in these traditional forms—the literati qualities of slenderness, wrinkling, perforation, and translucency—she reanimates them through saturated fields of red and dynamic brushwork, endowing them with renewed sensory vitality. Her practice introduces bold and heightened chromatic intervention that departs from the restraint of traditional ink painting, imbuing these inherited symbols with distinctly contemporary tension. "Growth" in Huang's work extends beyond biological connotation, signifying instead an eruption of cultural energy. Through collision of intense color and infusion of expressive xieyi (freehand brushwork) spirit, her work dismantles the restraint traditionally associated with classical aesthetics while constructing a distinctly contemporary visual language. The series establishes internal continuity through extension of imagery and resonance of spirit, revealing the boundless potential for Eastern imagery to continuously reinvent itself within cross-cultural context and demonstrating the enduring vitality and innovative capacity of tradition in the present.

Wenqian Qu is an artist who deeply believes in the enduring power of painting to capture the nuances of the modern world. Having mastered her craft at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Qu returned to her alma mater to guide the next generation of painters, serving as faculty at the School of City Design. Her artistic philosophy centers on intense observation of reality, a discipline she emphasizes in her teaching to help students find depth in even the simplest subjects. For Qu, art is not merely technical skill but a vital way of seeing and understanding life itself. Her practice demonstrates seamless integration between quiet studio work and her energetic role as educator, reflecting her conviction that artistic excellence emerges from sustained attention to the visible world. Through her paintings, Qu captures subtle shifts in atmosphere, light, and form, translating quotidian experience into works of contemplative presence. Her commitment to both making and teaching positions her as an important voice in contemporary Chinese painting, one dedicated to preserving rigorous observational practice while exploring its possibilities within contemporary artistic discourse.

Visiting Oro & Aquae

Oro & Aquae is currently undertaking an extensive renovation of our gallery space to create an environment worthy of the exceptional works we present. Our new facility will feature state-of-the-art climate control, lighting systems, and exhibition architecture designed to provide optimal conditions for both artwork preservation and visitor experience. We anticipate completing this transformation and welcoming the public to our inaugural exhibition in late 2026.

During this interim period, we continue to serve our community of artists and collectors through private appointments. These intimate viewings allow for unhurried contemplation and meaningful dialogue about the works in our program.
